In his larger-than-life portraits and figure studies, Lohner explores themes of masculine identity and relationships, pushing the boundaries of traditional printmaking through scale, materials, and innovative display methods. His richly layered monoprints, infused with bold color and intricate patterns, invite close, in-person engagement. A centerpiece of 3X is Swimming in the Sky, a striking installation of twelve double- sided monoprints. Printed in luminous shades of blue on lacy white fabric, these prints are stretched over bamboo rods like kites, depicting figures floating above the gallery space to create a dreamlike atmosphere. Another interactive work, 32 Disguises, invites viewers to see themselves through a series of printed masks, adding an element of play and self-exploration. Visitors may also engage with Fourth Grade Lessons, a sculptural piece where they can sit at a vintage school desk and create their own rubbing prints. Additionally, a preview of Lohner’s ambitious, room-sized work-in-progress will be on display—a project supported in part by the City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture. Harold Lohner is a 2025 recipient of the Artist to Work Grant in the Experimental category. 3X marks his third solo exhibition at Five15Arts, where he has been a member since 2022. A professor emeritus of art and a designer of digital type, Lohner now lives and prints in Phoenix, continuing to push the limits of printmaking as a dynamic, large-scale art form.
