Northlight Gallery

605 E Grant St, Phoenix, AZ 85004, USA

Northlight Gallery at the ASU Herberger Institute's School of Art is a laboratory for thinking about and experimenting with photography today to understand and actively examine its role as an experimental art medium and as mediator and shaper of reality in contemporary society. Northlight Gallery was founded on the Tempe campus by Professor Jack Stuler and MFA photo students in 1972 at a time when the medium was struggling to be recognized locally as a fine art. Now, over five decades later, photography and related digital technologies dominate contemporary art as well as our daily lives. Northlight Gallery is a center for debate, exhibition, and interpretation of photography, both historical and present-day. Northlight houses two important historical photographic collections, the Northlight Gallery’s permanent collection and the Solari Foundation collection on long-term loan that include the works of internationally renowned artists such as Ansel Adams, Eugene Atget, Thomas Barrow, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Henri Cartier Bresson, Harry Callahan, Linda Connor, Van Deren Coke, Betty Hahn, Eikoh Hosoe, Mary Ellen Mark, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Aaron Siskind, Frederick Sommer, Paul Strand, Andy Warhol and Edward Weston. These collections offer an invaluable resource for teaching and art historical research for the ASU community and at large, to learn about analog photographic methods and printing techniques; and to examine critically and creatively the ways historical photography has shaped contemporary ways of seeing in subjects it has traditionally addressed such as landscape, gender, portraiture, the body and history, including colonial history.

For thousands of years, the Ancestral Sonoran Desert People, known to archaeologists as the Hohokam, have lived in Phoenix and the surrounding areas. They have been intimately connected to the landscape transforming it for their needs including the irrigation canals and agricultural fields still visible behind the museum. The village of S'edav Va'aki was settled around AD 500, and was occupied for over 1000 years. After AD 1400, the population declined and the people relocated to smaller villages. The Akimel O’Odham, descendants of the people who lived at S'edav Va'aki, still live and thrive in the Phoenix area. The Museum and park is an extraordinary archaeological site where visitors can see a platform mound, a ballcourt, and centuries-old irrigation canals that are among the rare, remaining examples of the Ancestral Sonoran Desert People’s exceptional architecture and engineering skills. Shemer Art Center

Shemer Art Center and Museum, 5005 E Camelback Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85018, USA

The Shemer Art Center is located at the southeast corner of Camelback Road and East Arcadia Drive (48th Street) in Phoenix. Set at the base of Camelback Mountain, the site offers panoramic views of the beautiful Arcadia neighborhood, framed by a touch of nostalgia. In 1919, developers led by Seymour Jordan formed the Arcadia Water Company and began drilling wells with the intent to sell homesites in the newly named Arcadia neighborhood. To house the foreman of the water company, the first home in Arcadia was built. In July 1984, long-time Phoenix resident and real estate investor Martha Shemer purchased the twice-renovated, Sante-Fe mission-style home and land. Working with Mayor Terry Goddard, Mrs. Shemer donated the home to the City of Phoenix, not only to preserve the historical property but also to ensure it was used as a community center for city residents. Today, the Shemer Art Center has become a cultural center for all ages. It is a “home for the arts” that provides a unique and inviting atmosphere for residents and visitors to enjoy and learn about visual art, through classes, lectures, workshops, exhibits and events. Areas of instruction offered year-round by professional teaching artists include drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, fused glass, mixed media, photography and jewelry-making. Additional features of the Shemer Art Center include a boutique gift shop plus an outdoor sculpture garden, both featuring beautiful, one-of-a-kind works of art created by some of Arizona’s most talented artists, for viewing and for sale. There is no doubt that “Art Lives Here!” In 1992 the Shemer Art Center was designated as one of the City of Phoenix’s Points of Pride. It was named “One of the 10 Best Museums in Phoenix” by USA Today and “One of Phoenix’s 10 Best Kept Secrets” by The Culture Trip!
